This is a tiny three day old baby hedgehog called Shreddie, (so called because she was brought to us in an empty Shreddie box).  The loose folds of skin on her body indicate that she is severely dehydrated.
This is the same baby at three days old.  The second coat of prickles can be seen emerging.  These are dark brown with white tips and are much smaller than the adult spines.
This baby hedgehog (called a hoglet) is less than one hour old.  The little white spines are encased within a water sac which disperses soon after birth.  He now has an even coat of white prickles which begin to push through the skin.
